Imperial Citadel of Thang Long
UNESCO World Heritage Site and former royal seat of Vietnamese dynasties for over 1,000 years.
Overview
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is Hanoi's most historically significant site — a UNESCO World Heritage property that served as the political centre of Vietnam for nearly 1,300 years. King Lý Thái Tổ chose this location as his capital in 1010, and successive dynasties expanded the complex until the Nguyen emperors moved the capital to Hue in 1802. What remains above ground includes the imposing Flag Tower, the ornate Doan Mon gate, and the former Defence Ministry building (House D67) where General Vo Nguyen Giap planned military campaigns against the US.
Ongoing archaeological excavations continue to uncover foundations, ceramics, and artefacts from every dynasty. The underground galleries are a highlight. Located at 18 Hoang Dieu Street, Ba Dinh. Entry approximately 40,000 VND; open daily 08:00–17:00.
