Bat Trang Ceramic Village
A 600-year-old pottery village 13 km from central Hanoi where you can watch artisans at work, try throwing your own pot, and browse hundreds of ceramic stalls.
Overview
Bat Trang has been producing pottery for over 600 years, capitalising on the clay-rich banks of the Red River 13 km southeast of Hanoi. The village market is a maze of stalls selling everything from mass-produced tourist pieces to genuinely fine hand-painted ceramics. More interesting is watching the workshops: artisans shaping, glazing, and firing pieces in traditional wood-burning kilns. Several studios offer hands-on pottery classes where you throw your own bowl on a wheel and glaze it to take home.
Reachable by Bus 47 from Dong Xuan Market (20-minute frequency) or by motorbike in 20 minutes. Free to wander; class prices vary by studio (~150,000–300,000 VND). Best combined with a morning market visit, then lunch at a local restaurant serving riverside dishes.
