Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son)
Five limestone outcrops 8 km south of Da Nang riddled with Buddhist caves, temples, and hilltop shrines — with panoramic views over the coast and a marble-carving village below.
Overview
The Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn — "Five Elements Mountains") are five marble and limestone outcrops rising from the flat coastal plain 8 km south of Da Nang, each named for one of the classical elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The most visited is Thuy Son (Water Mountain), which contains a complex of Buddhist temples, shrines, and cave sanctuaries that have been in use since the 15th century. Some of the cave temples are open to natural light through holes in the cave roof; others are lit by candlelight and incense. A glass elevator now provides easy access to the summit level, where panoramic views stretch from the coast to the mountains behind Hoi An.
Entry approximately 40,000 VND; elevator 15,000 VND each way. Open daily 07:00–17:30. The base of the mountain is surrounded by marble-carving workshops producing everything from small souvenirs to full-scale Buddha statues — the sound of chisels is constant. About 8 km south of Da Nang on the road toward Hoi An; easy to visit as a stop between the two cities.
