Da Nang Cathedral
A bubblegum-pink French Gothic cathedral built in 1923, nicknamed the "Rooster Church" for its weathervane — the city's most charming colonial landmark, with stained glass and a Lourdes grotto.
Overview
Da Nang Cathedral (Nhà Thờ Chính Tòa Da Nẵng) is the city's most striking colonial building — a tall pink Gothic Revival church built between 1923 and 1924 by French priest Louis Vallet for the city's Catholic community. The exterior is painted a distinctive bubblegum pink and topped by a 70 m bell tower with a rooster weathervane, which gave rise to the local nickname "Nhà Thờ Con Gà" (Rooster Church). Inside, French-made stained glass windows tell Biblical stories in vivid colour, and a replica of the Lourdes grotto sits in the garden. The cathedral remains an active parish with a large Vietnamese congregation.
