Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Before Hanoi, Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam. The Dinh and Le dynasties ruled from this fortified valley in the 10th century, protected by natural limestone walls. Today two beautifully maintained temples survive: Dinh Tien Hoang Temple and Le Dai Hanh Temple, both featuring intricate carvings, gilded altars, and ceremonial courtyards. The surrounding countryside — karst peaks, rice paddies, the Hoang Long River — looks much as it must have 1,000 years ago.

Entry: 20,000 VND. Open 7 AM–5 PM. Dress respectfully (covered shoulders and knees). Hoa Lu is the starting point for most Trang An boat tours.
