Kim Bong Carpentry Village
A traditional woodworking village across the river from the ancient town, where craftsmen use centuries-old joinery techniques to build furniture and restore Hoi An's heritage buildings.
Overview
Kim Bong Carpentry Village sits on the south bank of the Thu Bon River, directly across from Hoi An's ancient town, and has supplied the timber craftsmen who built and maintained those heritage buildings for 400 years. The workshops still produce traditional Vietnamese furniture — altar tables, screen panels, lacquered cabinets — using mortise-and-tenon joinery with no nails or adhesives. Several masters also work on the ongoing restoration of Hoi An's ancient houses, applying the same techniques their great-grandparents used. A visit gives context to everything you see in the old town.
Free to walk through the village and observe workshops; most craftsmen are happy to have visitors watch. Accessible by rowboat from the riverside near the market (10 min, ~30,000 VND) or by bicycle via the Cam Nam bridge. No fixed opening hours — workshops are active from early morning until late afternoon on weekdays.
