Perfume River Boat Tour
The classic Hue experience — a traditional dragon boat drifting past pagodas, royal tombs, and colonial villas on the slow green Perfume River.
Overview
A dragon boat journey on the Perfume River is the quintessential Hue experience. Wooden boats with carved dragon prows drift at walking pace past the city's layered history: the citadel walls, French colonial villas, village shrines, bamboo fishing weirs, and the hills where the royal tombs are hidden among pine forest. Day trips typically stop at Thien Mu Pagoda, one or two mausoleums, and Hon Chen Temple. Evening cruises are more atmospheric — coloured lights reflect on the slow green water and traditional Nha Nhac court music is sometimes performed on board.
Boat hire from Toa Kham wharf (near the citadel): approximately 150,000–250,000 VND per hour for a private boat. Full-day tours with mausoleum stops: 300,000–500,000 VND per person. Bargain with boatwomen at the dock or book through a hotel. The river is best at dawn and dusk.
