Tam Coc
Three caves carved through limestone mountains with a winding river through rice paddies — the classic "Halong Bay on land" boat journey.
Overview
Tam Coc — meaning "three caves" in Vietnamese — is the most iconic boat journey in Ninh Binh. Rowers (often using their feet!) navigate flat-bottomed sampans through three natural tunnels carved into limestone mountains, surrounded by towering karsts and emerald rice paddies. The scenery shifts dramatically with the seasons: green paddies in summer, golden fields at harvest time.
Entry fee: 250,000 VND adults / 120,000 VND children. Best visited 7–9 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the midday crowds. Budget 2–3 hours for the return boat trip.
