Ha Giang province occupies Vietnam’s far north — a landscape of sheer limestone peaks, deep river gorges, and remote Hmong, Lo Lo, and Dao villages that feel untouched by mass tourism. The Ha Giang Loop is one of the great motorbike routes in Asia, but the region rewards those who go slow and stay longer.
1 Day — Not Recommended
Ha Giang is 300 km from Hanoi and the loop itself is 350 km. A one-day visit only reaches the town; the karst plateau scenery starts 2 hours north. Plan for a minimum of 3 days on the loop itself.
3 Days — The Classic Loop
- Day 1 (Ha Giang → Dong Van): Dong Van Karst Plateau (UNESCO Geopark) → Quan Ba Twin Mountains viewpoint → Yen Minh pine forests → Lung Cu Flag Tower at the northernmost point of Vietnam; overnight Dong Van
- Day 2 (Dong Van → Meo Vac): Dong Van Old Quarter → Ma Pi Leng Pass (the most dramatic road in Vietnam; 20 km of switchbacks above a 700 m gorge) → Nho Que River jade-green canyon; overnight Meo Vac
- Day 3 (Meo Vac → Ha Giang): Du Gia village → Tham Ma Pass → return via countryside. Optional: Du Gia Waterfall stop
4–5 Days — The Extended Loop
- Add a rest day in Dong Van to walk the old town and visit local Hmong villages on foot
- Detour to Lung Tam weaving village (La Chi ethnic group; traditional linen weaving)
- Boat on the Nho Que River from Meo Vac (1.5-hr trip through the turquoise gorge below Ma Pi Leng)
- Visit on a Sunday market day — Dong Van, Meo Vac, or Bac Me markets are when hill tribes come down from the mountains in traditional dress
Activities to Build Into Any Itinerary
- Sunrise from Dong Van Old Quarter — mist fills the valley, peaks emerge at golden hour
- Ma Pi Leng Pass at dawn before the tour groups arrive
- Nho Que River gorge boat trip — the jade-green water is most vivid after rain
- Homestay with a local Hmong family — ask at guesthouses in Dong Van or Meo Vac
- Buckwheat flower season (October–November) — the fields turn pink across the plateau
Practical Notes
- Getting there: 5-hr bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang town; or overnight bus (departs 10pm, arrives 5am). Then hire a motorbike or join a guided tour from town
- Motorbike hire: Semi-automatic 110cc bikes widely available in Ha Giang town (150,000–200,000 VND/day). Experience on mountain roads is essential — the passes are serious, especially in rain
- Easy riders: If you don’t want to drive, hire a local guide who drives; you ride pillion. Good option for solo travellers or first-timers
- Best season: October–November (buckwheat flowers, clear skies, harvest) and March–April (poppy fields, slightly less crowded). Avoid July–August (landslide season after heavy rain)
