Phat Diem Stone Cathedral
A striking 19th-century cathedral blending French Gothic and Vietnamese architecture — dark stone walls etched with dragon and lotus carvings, a bell tower, and enormous ironwood columns.
Overview
Phat Diem is one of the most architecturally unusual churches in Asia. Built between 1875 and 1899 by a Vietnamese priest, it combines a European Gothic floor plan with a Vietnamese communal-house aesthetic: massive stone walls, a curved tile roof, columns hewn from single ironwood trunks, and facades carved with dragons, lotus flowers, and phoenix. The complex includes a bell tower, the main cathedral, and four small side chapels, each in a different architectural style.
Free entry. Located 30 km southeast of Ninh Binh town — reachable by motorbike in about 45 minutes. Dress respectfully inside the cathedral.
