Red Sand Dunes (Bau Do)

Mui Ne's iconic terracotta dunes 15 km from Phan Thiet — sled the slopes, photograph the sculpted ridges, or catch the sunrise before the day-trippers arrive.

Overview

The Red Sand Dunes (Bàu Đỏ) are Mui Ne's most visited attraction — a stretch of terracotta and rust-coloured dunes about 15 km east of Phan Thiet near Hon Rom Beach. The dunes are modest compared to the White Sand Dunes further north, but the colour is extraordinary: iron-rich sand in shades of orange, red, and sienna that shift dramatically with the light at sunrise and sunset. Plastic sleds are rented at the base for sliding down the steepest faces — chaotic but fun. The surrounding landscape of scrub vegetation and distant sea views adds to the otherworldly atmosphere.

Entry free; sledding approximately 10,000–20,000 VND per sled rental. Best at sunrise (cooler, dramatic side-lit shadows on the ridges) or sunset. Arrive by motorbike — about 20 minutes east from Mui Ne town along the coastal road. The dunes are busiest between 15:00–17:00 with day-trippers; early mornings are peaceful.
