White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang)
Vast white dunes surrounding a freshwater lake 62 km north of Phan Thiet — a stark, Saharan landscape unique in Vietnam, best explored by jeep at sunrise.
Overview
The White Sand Dunes (Bàu Trắng — "White Lake") are the more dramatic and less visited alternative to the red dunes — a vast expanse of fine white sand encircling a freshwater lake in Bac Binh district, 62 km north of Phan Thiet. The scale is genuinely impressive: the dunes rise 50–80 metres and extend for kilometres, broken only by the two blue-green lakes at their base where kayaks can be hired. Sunrise jeep tours are the classic way to visit — a convoy of open 4WDs departs before dawn to catch the dunes in the first light, then breakfast by the lake.
Entry fee approximately 5,000–10,000 VND. Jeep hire for the dunes: ~600,000 VND private, ~150,000 VND per person shared. Located 62 km from Phan Thiet — about 1.5 hours by motorbike. Most visitors combine this with the Red Dunes as a full-day round trip. Bring sun protection — the white sand reflects intensely.
