Dinh Cau Shrine

A small sea-goddess shrine perched on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the Duong Dong River — a local landmark and one of the best sunset viewpoints on the island.

Overview

Dinh Cau Shrine (Dinh Cậu) sits on a small rocky headland where the Duong Dong River meets the sea, dedicated to the goddess Thien Hau who protects fishermen on their voyages. Local fishing families have maintained the shrine since 1937; every year on the 15th and 16th of the ninth lunar month, the entire fishing community gathers for the Ngo Ong festival — a ceremony of gratitude and prayer before the new fishing season. The promontory gives a 270-degree view over the harbour, the river mouth, and the South China Sea, making it one of the best sunset spots on the island.

Free entry. Located at the northern end of Duong Dong town, a short walk from the night market. The 29 stone steps to the shrine platform are manageable for all ages. Best visited 30 minutes before sunset — arrive early to claim a spot on the rocks.
