Mui Ne Fishing Village
A traditional basket-boat fishing community at the northern end of Mui Ne — the early-morning fish market is one of the most colourful and photogenic scenes on the south coast.
Overview
The Mui Ne Fishing Village at the northern end of the Mui Ne peninsula is one of the most photographically compelling scenes on the south coast. Hundreds of round basket boats (thung chai) and larger wooden fishing vessels crowd the sheltered bay, painted in vivid blues, reds, and yellows. The fish market operates in the early morning — from around 05:00 when the night boats return — with catch being sorted, weighed, and auctioned directly on the beach. By 08:00 it is largely over. The village itself is a working community, not a tourist attraction, so a respectful and unobtrusive approach is appreciated.
Free to visit. Fish market 04:30–08:00. Located at the northern end of Mui Ne, about 3 km from the main resort strip. A good sunrise motorbike ride: leave the resort at 05:00, catch the market, then head to the Red Dunes for the early light before returning for breakfast.
