Nha Trang Itinerary Ideas

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s original beach city — a proper coastline right in front of the urban centre, excellent diving and snorkelling in the surrounding bay, the colonial Po Nagar Cham towers, and a lively resort strip that caters equally to Russian charter tourists and backpackers on a budget.

1 Day in Nha Trang

  • Morning: Tran Phu Beach swim → Dam Market for a banh canh cua breakfast (crab noodle soup, the local specialty)
  • Midday: Po Nagar Cham Towers (10th–12th century; active Hindu temple on the hill above the Cai River; 30 min)
  • Afternoon: Long Son Pagoda and Great White Buddha (panoramic city view from the hilltop)
  • Evening: Seafood dinner at the night market near the beach; sunset cocktail on a rooftop bar

2 Days in Nha Trang

  • Day 1: City sights — Po Nagar, Long Son Pagoda, Alexandre Yersin Museum (the Swiss doctor who discovered plague bacillus lived here for 50 years)
  • Day 2: Island hopping boat tour — Mun Island (the best snorkelling in Vietnam’s south; coral reef), Hon Tam, Hon Mieu (aquarium and lobster farm); snorkelling, beach, floating bar

3 Days in Nha Trang

  • Day 1: City and beach
  • Day 2: Scuba diving day — Mun Island has consistently clear water (15–20 m visibility); multiple dive operators on Tran Phu Beach road
  • Day 3: Day trip to Ninh Van Bay (boat; luxury resort island; accessible to non-guests for the beach and snorkelling) or Ba Ho Waterfalls in the jungle 20 km north

4–5 Days: Nha Trang Extended

  • Vinpearl Land: Cable car across the bay to the amusement park island (best for families)
  • Yang Bay Waterfall eco-park: 45 km inland; waterfalls, crocodile farm, ethnic minority village performances
  • Khanh Hoa countryside: Motorbike inland through rice valleys to Dien Khanh Citadel and hill-tribe villages

Activities to Build Into Any Itinerary

  • Sunrise beach walk before the sun gets too hot — the beach is almost empty before 7am
  • Nha Trang Night Market (near the fishing harbour) — cheap seafood grilled to order
  • I-Resort mud baths and mineral hot springs (15 min north of centre; good for a half-day spa)
  • Kite-surfing lesson at Bai Dai Beach (45 min south; the best wind in the region)

Practical Notes

  • Getting there: Cam Ranh Airport is 35 km south (frequent flights from Hanoi, HCMC, Da Nang); express train on the main north–south line
  • Getting around: Walk the beach strip; Grab for everywhere else; hire motorbike for day trips
  • Best season: January–August (dry, clear water for diving). Avoid October–December (rough seas, poor visibility)
  • Avoid: The all-inclusive beer boat tours (“4-island tour with unlimited beer”) — these are crowded, loud, and not the best way to see the bay’s natural beauty
