Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province contains the world’s largest cave system, including Son Doong — a cave so vast it has its own weather, jungle, and separate ecosystem. Even without Son Doong (which requires a $3,000 permit), the park’s accessible caves and jungle are among the most extraordinary in Southeast Asia.
1 Day in Phong Nha
- Morning: Phong Nha Cave by boat — the river entrance, luminous stalactites, a 1-km illuminated cave passage (the classic “easy” cave; most visited)
- Afternoon: Paradise Cave (Thien Duong) — 7 km of cathedral-scale cave passage, the longest dry cave in Asia; a 1-km boardwalk goes through the most dramatic section
- Evening: Phong Nha village — small but excellent restaurant strip along the Son River; fresh river fish
2 Days in Phong Nha
- Day 1: Phong Nha Cave (boat) + Paradise Cave
- Day 2: Dark Cave adventure (zip-line entry, swim through darkness, mud bath; half day) + Tu Lan Cave system (swimming through river caves; full-day guided trek; one of the most exciting cave experiences in Vietnam without a Son Doong permit)
3 Days in Phong Nha
- Day 1: Phong Nha Cave + Paradise Cave
- Day 2: Tu Lan Cave trek (full day, swimming and scrambling through five cave chambers)
- Day 3: Nuoc Mooc Spring Eco-Trail (forest walk, river swimming, zip-line) + motorbike through the national park buffer zone to Ho Chi Minh Road viewpoint
4–5 Days: Son Doong or Advanced Caves
- Son Doong expedition: 4 nights / 5 days inside the world’s largest cave; only 1,000 permits/year; book a year or more ahead through Oxalis Adventure
- Hang En overnight: 2-day/1-night expedition to the world’s third-largest cave (camp on an underground beach); more accessible Son Doong alternative ($300–400)
- Ho Chi Minh Road motorbike ride: The old wartime supply route runs through spectacular jungle north toward Hue
Activities to Build Into Any Itinerary
- Kayak on the Son River at dawn — mirror-flat water, forest reflections, often misty
- Cycling through the valley to Tan Hoa village (20 km; flat, through rice fields)
- Birdwatching at the forest edge — the park has over 300 species including the extremely rare saola
Practical Notes
- Getting there: Dong Hoi is the nearest town (45 km; has an airport and train station). A bus or hire car from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha village (1 hr)
- Cave bookings: Most adventure caves must be pre-booked; Oxalis Adventure is the most respected operator for technical caves
- Best season: February–August (dry season; caves fully accessible). Avoid October–November (flooding can close some caves)
- Phong Nha village: Small and quiet — a handful of guesthouses and restaurants along the river. Stay here rather than Dong Hoi for the full experience
