It’s the central Vietnam dilemma. Hoi An or Da Nang? They’re 30km apart and connected by a flat coastal highway — theoretically you could stay in one and day-trip to the other. But which should be your base?
Choose Hoi An If…
You want charm over convenience. You’re not bothered by tourist crowds. You want to get clothes made. You’re travelling slowly and happy to pay a small premium for romantic ambience. You want An Bang Beach within cycling distance. You don’t need fast, reliable coworking internet.
Choose Da Nang If…
You’re a digital nomad who needs reliable fibre internet and a proper coworking space. You want an international airport for easy regional flights. You want beach access without Ancient Town crowds. You prefer a local Vietnamese city vibe to a tourist town. You’re staying for a month or more and want supermarkets, hospitals, and gyms.
The Verdict
For a 3–5 day visit: Hoi An wins on atmosphere. For a month or longer: Da Nang is the more liveable choice. For nomads: Da Nang, no contest. A Grab from Da Nang to Hoi An costs $5 and takes 40 minutes — there’s no reason to feel you’re missing out by basing in the city.
