Most visitors to Vietnam require a visa — but the process is straightforward if you know what you need. This guide covers who needs a visa, who does not, and how to apply correctly.
Do You Need a Visa?
Most visitors require a visa unless they are from one of 38 countries with visa exemption agreements. Citizens of exempt countries can enter with just a valid passport. Everyone else must apply for an e-visa.
Visa Exemption Countries (as of September 2025)
- 90 days: Chile, Panama
- 45 days: Most European nations
- 14-21 days: Brunei, Myanmar, and select others
Key requirements for visa-free entry:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
- Minimum 2 blank pages in your passport
- The 30-day interval between visa-exempt stays was eliminated as of July 2020
- British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders cannot access the 45-day exemption
Extending Your Stay
- Conduct a visa run to a neighboring country (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos)
- Apply for a 90-day e-visa before arrival
Phu Quoc Island Special Rules
Foreigners entering Phu Quoc by air or sea may stay visa-free for up to 30 days. This exemption is for Phu Quoc only — visiting other Vietnamese destinations requires a standard visa.
Applying for the E-Visa
Apply through the official Vietnamese government immigration portal only. Be cautious of third-party websites — common scam sites steal personal data or charge excessive fees. Always verify the URL and use secure payment methods.
Important Notes
- Apply well in advance — processing can take several business days
- Single-entry e-visas allow stays of up to 90 days
- Multiple-entry e-visas are also available for eligible applicants
- Always cross-check the latest requirements before your trip
