Christmas in Vietnam: What to Expect and Where to Go

Christmas in Vietnam is a surprisingly festive experience — a blend of Catholic tradition, French colonial influence, and Vietnamese celebration. Here is what to expect and where to enjoy the holiday season.

Do Vietnamese People Celebrate Christmas?

Yes — and more enthusiastically than most visitors expect. Vietnam ranks as the second-most Catholic nation in Asia after the Philippines. Hotels and shopping malls in major cities fill with festive decorations from early December. About three weeks before Christmas, streets light up and families decorate with trees and ornaments. Many attend midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The Vietnamese greeting is Chuc Mung Giang Sinh (Merry Christmas).

Important note: Christmas is not a public holiday in Vietnam — tourist sites, shops, and restaurants remain open December 24-25.
