Vietnam weather is one of the most important factors in planning your trip. The country spans 1,700 kilometers from north to south, and different regions have completely different climate patterns. There is no single best time to visit — it depends on where you are going.
Three Climate Zones
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Giang, Ha Long, Ninh Binh)
The north has four distinct seasons. Summers (June-August) are hot and humid with heavy rainfall. Winters (December-February) are cool and misty — sometimes cold in the mountains. Spring (March-April) and autumn (September-November) are generally the best times to visit.
- Best months: March-April and September-November
- Special: Sapa and Ha Giang are spectacular in September-October for golden rice terraces
Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Phong Nha)
Central Vietnam has a climate pattern opposite to the north. While the rest of the country enjoys dry weather November-April, central Vietnam rainy season peaks in October-November. This is also the region most affected by typhoons.
- Best months: February-August (dry and warm)
- Avoid: October-November (heavy rain, flooding, typhoon risk)
Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Mui Ne, Phu Quoc)
The south has two seasons: dry (November-April) and wet (May-October). Temperatures are warm year-round (25-35 degrees C). The rainy season brings daily afternoon showers but rarely affects morning activities significantly.
- Best months: November-April
- Acceptable: May-October (rainy but warm; lower prices and fewer tourists)
