Hoai River Boat Rides

Hand-rowed wooden boats drifting along the Thu Bon River past lantern-lit shophouses — the most romantic way to see Hoi An at dusk.

Overview

An evening boat ride on the Hoai River (a distributary of the Thu Bon) is one of Hoi An's most memorable experiences. Hand-rowed wooden boats depart from the riverside near Nguyen Phuc Chu Street after dark, when the ancient town's yellow walls glow with lantern light reflected in the water. Most rides last 20–30 minutes and include the option to release a flower-and-candle lantern (đèn hoa đăng) onto the water — a wish-making tradition that has become central to the Hoi An experience. The full moon Lantern Festival on the 14th of each lunar month is the most atmospheric time, when electric lights are switched off across the old town.

Boat hire from the riverside: approximately 100,000–150,000 VND per boat (fits 3–4 people). Lanterns sold separately (~10,000–20,000 VND each). Best from 18:00 onwards. Bargain gently with the boatwomen — it's expected.
