Nha Trang Oceanographic Museum

Vietnam's oldest and largest marine research institute, with public aquarium displays of South China Sea species — a good wet-day activity for families and ocean enthusiasts.

Overview

The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute (Viện Hải Dương Học) was established in 1923 — the oldest marine research centre in Vietnam and one of the most extensive in Southeast Asia. The public museum section displays thousands of preserved and live specimens from the South China Sea: colourful reef fish in large aquarium tanks, preserved sharks and rays, a skeleton of a sperm whale, and extensive collections of sea shells, coral, and crustaceans. It is one of the best rainy-day options in Nha Trang, particularly for families with children.

Entry approximately 40,000 VND adults / 20,000 VND children. Open daily 06:00–18:00. Located at 1 Cau Da Street, near Cau Da port at the southern end of the beachfront. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a thorough visit. The live aquarium building is the highlight — circular tanks with moray eels, grouper, and coral reef species.
